Life expectancy with fatty liver disease

Life expectancy with fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease, also known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver. It is a growing health concern, affecting millions of people worldwide. In this article, we will discuss the life expectancy of individuals with fatty liver disease and the impact of this condition on overall health.

Life expectancy in individuals with this disease can vary greatly, depending on several factors such as age, overall health, and the severity of liver damage. In general, people with mild forms of NAFLD tend to have a life expectancy similar to that of the general population. However, those with more severe forms of the disease, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), may experience a reduction in life expectancy .

NASH is a progressive form of NAFLD that can lead to liver failure, liver cirrhosis and an increased risk of liver cancer. Individuals with NASH may also experience other health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problem. These comorbidities can further reduce life expectancy and increase the risk of complications.

Symptoms of  Fatty Liver

This disease often does not cause any symptoms in the early stages. But, when this type of any symptoms do occur, they may include

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Weight loss gradually
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
  • Itching problem
  • Dark urine color
  • Easy bruising
  • Enlargement of the liver

Fatty liver Test Liver Function Test

Liver manufactures other types of substances in the body apart from enzymes. If the amount of substances made by the liver increases in the blood, then the liver starts getting damaged. That's why doctors test the patient's blood in the liver function test. From which it can be ascertained that what is the amount of enzyme present in the blood. Liver function abnormalities can be detected by this test. And liver damage can also be detected.

Ultrasound test

This is a non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create images of the liver. Ultrasound can identify the presence of fat in the liver and determine the severity of fatty liver disease. Ultrasound is a widely used diagnostic tool for fatty liver disease because it is inexpensive, widely available, and does not expose patients to radiation.

Computed Tomography (CT) scan

CT scan is also an imaging test but it is more effective than ultrasound which uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed images of the liver. CT scans can detect fatty liver disease, as well as other liver problems such as tumors and abscesses.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

This is an imaging test. Which generates strong magnetic field and radio waves. If any type of excess fat or severe symptoms are seen in the liver, then MRI shows detailed images of the liver from which liver damage can be detected.

Fibroscan

This is a non invasive test. With its help, liver fibrosis and its associated disease complications can be detected. This is done when there is a scar on the liver due to a problem like inflammation in the liver.

Liver biopsy

Liver biopsy is an invasive procedure in which a small sample of liver tissue is removed and examined under a microscope. Liver biopsy can confirm the diagnosis of fatty liver disease and determine the severity of the disease. However, liver biopsy is an invasive procedure with a risk of complications such as bleeding and infection. Liver biopsy is usually reserved for cases in which other tests are inconclusive or more information is needed to guide treatment.

In conclusion, This type of problem health concern that can significantly impact life expectancy. However, with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many individuals with NAFLD can improve their fitness and reduce their risk of complications. If you have any concerns about your liver health, it is important to speak with your doctor and undergo regular check-ups to monitor your condition.
